Senior Counseling

Why is Senior Counseling important?

Let’s face it. We live in a society where very little attention is paid to seniors’ mental health. However, we have to be mindful that seniors like younger people deserve to have their challenges acknowledged and their feelings validated. Many seniors also grew up in a time when mental illness was stigmatized and simply written off as a normal part of aging. At Discovering U Counseling, our goal is to demystify that myth and help seniors find new sources of enjoyment and meaning in their lives.

Who can benefit from Senior Counseling?

Research has shown that almost one in five seniors are affected by a mental illness but yet, less than 3 percent report seeing a professional for their issue.  Among the issues that our therapists can help seniors address are:

  • Sudden or Chronic Illness
  • End of Life Concerns
  • Grief
  • Loss of Independence/Social Life
  • Stress
  • Loneliness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Elder Abuse

How does Senior Counseling work?

At Discovering U Counseling, our therapists understand that no two seniors are the same. As a result, our therapists will use a tailored, individualized flexible approach that considers each senior specific need. Our individual counseling sessions for seniors can last anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes. During the first session, your therapist will conduct a diagnostic assessment where he/she will collect voluntary information from you to assess your situation and together with you determine a treatment plan.
